Two people have been arrested for exploiting Kano’s first lady’s name to extort state funds.

The Kano State Police Command has detained two suspected scammers for allegedly extorting money from the people by impersonating the state governor’s wife.

SP. Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command’s spokesman, confirmed the arrest in a statement sent to the media on Friday.

He stated that Umar Adamu and Hussaini Musa were arrested for financing a public declaration falsely attributed to the Governor’s wife.

“I greet you, the good people of Kano State,” said the audio broadcast on radio stations. A well-known global empowerment organisation, in conjunction with the wife of Kano State Governor, will fund the training of 2,000 people in catering skills such as pizza, shawarma, burger, eggroll, and samosa.”

He stated that the notice invited interested parties to pay N3,000 for the form and identity card.

He claimed the suspects extorted more than 50 people.

Kiyawa stated that an inquiry is underway to apprehend the conspirators and their backers.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, warned locals to be vigilant of extortion schemes that exploit the media.

He also asked media outlets to constantly check the legitimacy of advertisements before displaying them.
