Fireworks Canada Day show in Kelowna cancelled

The traditional Fireworks Canada Day, display in Kelowna was canceled just hours before it was scheduled to light up the evening sky.

Throughout the day, thousands of people began congregating in the downtown core for the annual event.

However, about 2 p.m., a wildfire broke out in nearby Knox Mountain Park, delaying the much-anticipated pyrotechnics display.

According to the city, emergency crews are still on the scene at Knox Mountain Park, which is currently closed to the public.

“Other community festivities will continue along Kelowna’s waterfront into the evening,” the city added.

“We are disappointed that we will not be able to produce our annual fireworks event, but the safety of first responders, firefighters, and affected residents is paramount,” said Renata Mills, executive director of Festivals Kelowna.

“In the spirit of Canada Day, our hearts are with all those who are helping to protect our community and those affected by today’s fire.”
