A Baltimore doctor was shot during an attempted carjacking on his way to the hospital in the morning.

According to local sources, a doctor was wounded during an attempted carjacking in Baltimore on his morning commute on Friday.

Dr. Madhu Subramanian, a 38-year-old physician and assistant professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, was on his way to work around 7 a.m.

A male was found injured on the 1200 block of East 36th Street in Northeast Baltimore a few minutes later, according to city police.

According to the hospital’s website, Subramanian specializes in acute care surgery, trauma surgery, surgical critical care, burn treatment, and general surgery.

In an email to staff acquired by the Baltimore Sun, Johns Hopkins officials stated that Subramanian had already been released.

“With his permission, we can share that Dr. Madhu Subramanian, a trauma and acute care surgeon, was on his way to work at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center when the incident occurred near the 3600 block of Loch Raven Boulevard,” wrote Paul Rothman, CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Kevin Sowers, president of Johns Hopkins Health System. “Fortunately, Dr. Subramanian was not gravely harmed and was treated and released.”

The shooting occurs as violent crime in Baltimore and other large American cities rises, with robberies, shootings, and homicides on the rise. Police said they rushed to another incident later Friday and discovered two young guys, ages 19 and 20, with gunshot wounds. According to investigators, neither of their injuries were life-threatening.

Dr. Joseph Sakran, a doctor at Johns Hopkins, addressed his colleague’s shooting in a Twitter thread on Friday after saying he treated Subramanian’s injuries.

He commented, “We are very grateful he escaped this awful catastrophe and will be OK.”

“We often compartmentalize the emotion that comes with caring for these damaged folks in the heat of the moment.” And we do it so that we can make one meticulous decision after another to save someone’s life. When it’s one of your own, how do you handle it?”

Sakran, who was shot as a teenager, went on to say that “Gun Violence is a Public Health Crisis that we face daily in Baltimore, and communities all throughout America,” and that society must “do better.”
