Sowore’s arrest for protesting has been declared illegal by a court. #RevolutionNow

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the arrest of Omoyele Sowore, an activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, for his 2019 RevolutionNow protest was illegal.

Following a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Mr. Sowore, the court issued the ruling on Monday, March 21.

The State Security Service (SSS) must also pay the activist N1 million, according to Justice Obiora Egwuato.

Mr. Sowore’s lawyer, Marshal Abubakar, of the law firm of Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, described Monday’s ruling as yet another victory for the “notorious” SSS. Read more

It was an affirmation of Mr. Sowore’s and other Nigerians’ rights to “protest, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and freedom of movement,” he said.
